Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany has agreed to join Aston Villa this summer, sources have confirmed to 90min.
Villa boss Unai Emery has turned the club around since his arrival in October, and Villa are now keen to put more pieces in place around him with the hope of establishing themselves as a top six team in the Premier League.
Sources have confirmed to 90min that Alemany will take on a senior role at Villa Park and will work closely with Emery as they look to build a squad capable of pushing for Champions League qualification next season.
Alemany joined Barcelona in 2021 from Valencia following Joan Laporta’s presidential election and has overseen the transfer business during a period of major upheaval both on and off the pitch at the Camp Nou.
His deal with Barca was due to run until 2024, but he informed Laporta of his desire to leave and they came to a mutual agreement that allowed him to leave at the end of this season.
“The incorporation of Mateu Alemany into the first team’s structure following Joan Laporta’s victory in the presidential elections has allowed FC Barcelona to complete operations that appeared impossible and provide the coach with a competitive team within the confines of the ongoing financial problems,” a Barcelona club statement stated.
“President Laporta has accepted this departure due to Mateu’s commitment to conduction the summer transfer business until the last moment and to be able to be consulted by the Club whenever necessary.
“FC Barcelona will shortly announce changes in the football executive structure once Mateu Alemany’s departure is announced.”
