AFCON 2025Q: Rwanda suffers heavy defeat to Benin

Amavubi suffered a heavy defeat to Benin in their third Group game of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers on Friday at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

Rwanda was hoping to grab their first win following two draws in their first two games against Libya and Nigeria but was unfortunate at night.

Coach Torsten Spittler’s side conceded three goals in both halves which resulted to their first defeat in Group D.

The match which was the fourth meeting between the two teams in two years saw Benin prove their worth and were able to collect all three points which increased their points to sick from three matches.

Coach Spittler’s side was hoping to do better following their outstanding performances from previous matches but Benin was far superior in the game and were the victors.

Both Benin and Rwanda have played 7 Games since 2010. Among them, Benin won 4 games (Total Goals 11, PPG 1.6), Rwanda won 1 (Total Goals 3, PPG 0.4), and drew 2.

Apart from this match, in this fourth group, Nigeria beat Libya 1-0 with a goal scored by Dele-Bashiru in the 87th minute.

After the third day’s games, Nigeria leads the group with 7 points, followed by Benin with 6 points, Rwanda and third with 2 points, while Libya has one point.

On Tuesday next week, October 15, 2024, Rwanda will host Benin, Libya will host Nigeria.
