The Swiss model is taking charge from the start of the 2024/25 season, with the format change seeing a shift away from group stages in favour of a league table.
A sense of freshness will bring added excitement to the competition next season, with UEFA refusing to touch the two-legged affairs that render the knockout stages so brilliant.
It’s just the initial phase of the Champions League that’ll be very different.
The usual suspects will once again compete for club football’s grandest prize, but a litany of novices will also take part among the continent’s supreme forces.
Here are all the teams to have qualified for the 2024/25 Champions League and their respective pot placements for the league stage draw.
- 2024/25 Champions League confirmed teams
36 teams will enter the 2024/25 Champions League proper, with only seven teams qualifying via the play-offs.
The vast majority have qualified off the back of their 2023/24 domestic performances, with ten champions across the continent automatically qualifying for the league stage.
Germany and Italy each have five teams in next season’s competition due to their high coefficients. Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund have so far qualified from the Bundesliga, while Inter, Milan, Bologna, Juventus and Atalanta have made it from Serie A.
Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa will represent the Premier League. Paris Saint-Germain have been joined by Monaco and Brest from Ligue 1.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are familiar faces from La Liga, but they’ll be accompanied by competition debutants Girona next season.
PSV, Celtic, Sporting CP and Sturm Graz all won their respective domestic leagues in 2023/24, with Feyenoord also qualifying for the league stage.
- When is the 2024/25 Champions League league stage draw
UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland will stage the first ever Champions League league stage draw on 29 August 2024.
The draw will be held following the conclusion of the play-offs, where 14 teams will compete for a spot in the league stage.
The change in format means teams won’t be placed into eight groups of four. Instead, the league stage draw will determine every team’s eight opponents. Each team will face two opponents from each pot.
